How Much Sleep Does My Baby Really Need?

Understanding Baby Sleep Needs, Sleep Amounts & Nap Patterns

One of the most common questions parents ask is:
“How much sleep does my baby actually need?”

While every baby is unique, there are helpful guidelines around baby sleep needs that can give us a starting point. Understanding how much sleep babies typically need and how to tell if your baby is getting enough, can make a huge difference to mood, feeding, development, and overall family wellbeing.

Sleep Amount vs Sleep Need: Why It’s Not Just About the Numbers

When we talk about baby sleep, it’s important to understand the difference between how much sleep a baby is getting and how much sleep they actually need.

For example, I once worked with a 7-month-old who was sleeping just 9.5 hours over 24 hours. He was unsettled, frequently upset, and struggling with feeding. After adjusting his routine to better meet his individual sleep needs, he began sleeping 13.5–14 hours per day and the change was remarkable. He was happier, more settled, fed more effectively, and engaged much more positively with weaning.

This is why context matters. A number on its own doesn’t tell the whole story, how your baby feels is just as important.

Typical Baby Sleep Needs by Age

Although there’s a wide range of normal, most babies tend to fall within certain sleep ranges over a 24-hour period (including naps):

  • Babies aged 4–12 months: around 12–16 hours

  • Toddlers aged 1–2 years: around 11–14 hours

  • Pre-schoolers aged 3–5 years: around 10–13 hours

These ranges are a helpful starting point, but some babies naturally sit towards the higher or lower end and that can be completely normal.

How Long Should My Baby Sleep at Night?

Night-time sleep can vary just as much as total daily sleep.

Some babies naturally sleep longer stretches at night, while others need more sleep spread across the day. During the first year especially, it’s very normal for night sleep length to vary from baby to baby.

Rather than comparing your baby to others, it’s more helpful to look at how rested they seem overall.

Daytime Sleep & Baby Nap Requirements

Daytime sleep can look very different between babies of the same age.

Some babies take:

  • Short naps (30–45 minutes) but need more of them

  • Longer naps (1.5–2+ hours) and need fewer

Both can be completely normal. The key is that total sleep over 24 hours meets your baby’s needs and that naps are supporting, not disrupting, night-time sleep.

How Many Naps Does My Baby Need?

Nap patterns naturally change as babies grow.

  • Younger babies often need multiple naps per day

  • By around 18 months, most children have settled into one nap per day

  • A small number may drop naps earlier or later, depending on their sleep needs

Nap transitions can feel daunting, but they’re a normal part of development and usually happen gradually.

Signs Your Baby May Need More (or Less) Sleep

Rather than focusing solely on wake windows or sleep charts, ask yourself:

  • Is my baby generally happy and alert?

  • Are they feeding or eating well?

  • Is their mood mostly stable during the day?

  • How do they seem when they wake in the morning?

  • Are they refreshed after naps or still unsettled?

These clues often tell us far more than exact sleep totals.

Sleep Balance: When Sleep Happens Matters Too

Total sleep is important but how that sleep is spread across the day and night also plays a big role.

For example:

  • Too much daytime sleep can reduce night-time sleep

  • Early morning waking or long night gaps can sometimes be linked to unbalanced naps

  • Small adjustments to nap timing (rather than adding more sleep) can often help improve nights

Finding the Right Sleep Amount for Your Baby

There is no single “perfect” amount of sleep for every baby.

Sleep needs change with age, development, and temperament and what works at one stage may need adjusting at another. Using general guidelines alongside your baby’s behaviour, mood, and feeding patterns is the most effective way to understand what they need.
